Facts About Georgia

The Republic of Georgia is a former state of the old Soviet Union and gained its independence in 1991.
  • The country borders the Black Sea with Russia to the north and Turkey to the south. To the east lies Armenia and Azerbaijan.
  • In early 2004, US educated Mikheil Saakashvili was popularly elected to power and he has instigated reforms aimed at revitalising the economy.
  • The West has invested heavily in the country with the building of an oil pipeline through Georgia from Azerbaijan to the Black Sea.
  • The majority of the population are Georgian Orthodox Christian who happily co-exist with people from many other religions
  • Georgians firmly believe in education and over 90% have the equivalent of a college degree! At 99%, the literacy rate is even higher than that of the US.
  • The patron saint of Georgia is St. George. No surprises therefore that the most popular male name is George. But did you know that the local name of the country is Sak'art'velo?
  • Georgians enjoy, above all, their food and wine. The national dish is “khachapuri” which is a thin pie filled with mildly salted cheese. Although not on every supermarket shelf (yet), you should try their semi-sweet red wines.
  • With the Greater Caucasus Mountains to the north and the Black Sea to the west, Georgia offers some spectacular scenery – often a popular holiday destination for Russian holidaymakers prior to the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
